CCM Ultra Tacks Hockey Stick Review

Last year, an old CCM legend relaunched with a point to make… and it made it loud and clear. The Tacks stick was a huge hit on all levels — from the NHL to house leagues. So, not content sitting back with the success, CCM is launching their Ultra Tacks hockey stick for the 2015-16 season.

If you’ve been living under a rock for over a year, you may not know about the original CCM Tacks stick from 2014, so here’s a quick refresher. The Tacks line was built to fill a gap in the CCM line-up. They had no mid kick-point stick and their NHL players were clamoring for one. Generally speaking, when NHL players start asking for something, it’s not long before the retail market is asking for it too — and this case was no exception. CCM introduced the Tacks stick as their mid kick-point model, designed with a stiff blade for players seeking accuracy and the smooth, effortless release of a mid kick-point stick.

Now with the Ultra Tacks stick release, CCM doesn’t seem to be trying to fix what’s not broken, but they certainly seem intent on improving things. With the Ultra Tacks, CCM makes an upgrade to one major feature and introduces another.

CCM Ultra Tacks Shoulder Pads Review

CCM-TACKS-PROTECTIVE

The new CCM Ultra Tacks shoulder pads provide a lightweight comfort and protection like no other. With the D3O Smart Foam Technology and innovative design, CCM was able to increase the area of the body covered by the Tacks shoulder pad while still managing to maintain a low profile. The Tacks pad is designed to provide the most coverage and protection possible.

The body area of the pad is made up of Tacks foam armor. Tacks foam armor is highly flexible, comfortable and extremely breathable. It grants players freedom of motion and helps to keep them cool during the course of the game.

CCM Ultra Tacks Hockey Gloves Review

ultra tacks glove preview

The new CCM Ultra Tacks glove, in my own opinion represents a major improvement from CCM over its predecessor, the CL500. Not that the CL500 was a bad glove, but as soon as you slip the Ultra Tacks glove on your hand, its quality is evident. It is extremely comfortable right off the wall and feels broken in enough for immediate use.

That alone sold me, as I predict it will sell a lot of other players. Gloves are bought first and foremost off of feel–if it’s not comfortable or just doesn’t feel right, most players won’t care about the technology inside or even give it a second look. They will go try on the next glove.

CCM D3O ‘Smart Foam’ Technology Review

D3O™ ‘Smart Foam’ in 2015 CCM Protective

Secondary-Logo
The coolest and most impactful thing we’ve seen in 2015 so far isn’t a stick, a pair of skates or a new glove color combo. Hands down, the coolest thing we’ve seen this year is D3O, which is referred to as a ‘Smart Foam.’ CCM has exclusive rights to it in the hockey world, but D3O is globally patented and used in a huge variety of products and industries to help protect. D3O is found in products ranging from cell phone cases to military protective gear, industrial work wear, motorcycle rider protection and in a multitude of sports equipment.

So what makes CCM D3O so special? How does it take hockey protective to the next level? It is a soft and flexible material, but has extremely high impact management properties—combining great protection and freedom of movement. See how that might be a nice quality to have in a piece of hockey gear?
